The El Paso Veterans Memorial and Museum is more than just a war monument - when built, it will serve as an eternal symbol of the unique brotherhood of veterans from the El Paso Southwest. WHY BUILD A MEMORIAL OR MUSEUM? To honor those who died - insuring a measure of lasting honor to the memory of El Pasoans who fell during World War 1, World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. To honor those who served - all veterans from the El Paso Southwest who answered the call of their country during the wars of the 20th Century and beyond. To honor those still in bondage - lest we forget, keeping the book open on POW/MIAs from the El Paso Southwest and to signify that these men and women will be remembered and their sacrifices will not be forgotten. |

WHAT WILL THE MEMORIAL LOOK LIKE? The El Paso Veterans Memorial and Museum will be constructed from a design selected by the original promoters of the memorial from a nationwide campaign in 1987. The El Paso Veterans Memorial and Museum was designed by local El Pasoan and Marine Veteran, Dan Haggerty and transformed from concept to plans by Edward E. McCormick of the architectural firm of McCormick, Kuykendall, McCombs, and Suerken, also from El Paso. The main theme of the memorial is the five pointed star to represent Texas with the points of the star becoming galleries to display the contributions and sacrifices of veterans during the conflicts of the 20th Century and beyond. The El Paso Veterans Memorial and Museum is designed to allow for display of local veteran memorabilia and will serve as both a memorial and a museum,. |

We All Must Remember! A poem from the original memorial effort in the 1980's: We were young. We have died. Remember us. We have done what we could but until it is finished it is not done. We have given our lives but until it is finished no one can know what our lives gave. Our deaths are not ours; they are yours; they will mean what you make them. Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say; it is you who must say this. We leave you our deaths. Give them meaning. We were young. We have died. Remember us. |
